NIHR BioResource Centre - Birmingham

Focusing on recruiting participants with long term health conditions such as diabetes, mental health and rare diseases.

The NIHR BioResource Birmingham recruits adults and children to studies on Rare Disease, Common Disease and Healthy Population across University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) and Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

We host the Centre for Rare Diseases for both adults and children. The UHB site is a specialist centre for specific rare conditions such as

  • Alpha 1 (respiratory),
  • Primary Scelorsing Cholangitis (Liver),
  • Cutaneous Lymphoma (Dermatology),
  • Sjogrens (Rheumatology)
  • Neuro-endocrine Tumours (Liver).

The Birmingham Children’s Hospital site hosts the first holistic paediatric Rare Disease centre in the UK.

Birmingham Women’s Hospital hosts the West Midlands Regional Genetics Centre; receiving referrals for patients with a wide range of rare genetic conditions from across the region.

The NIHR Bioresource covers participants who are living with long term health conditions, as well as healthy volunteers including parents/ guardians and staff members who can also be recruited given that they meet the eligibility requirements.

Our plans for the future:

  • To expand recruitment and target a wide range of rare diseases.
  • To liaise and continue to engage with the multidisciplinary teams so that we can boost recruitment.
  • Raise awareness through Trust Comms, social media and Rare Diseases days.
